From Pallets to Trendy Creations

Wooden pallets are primarily used for shipping and transporting goods that will be lifted by a forklift or pallet jack.  While it is a stable method of transferring goods from place to place, pallets also make a great foundation for several different do it yourself home projects.

There are many different pallet types available for upcycling.  Upcycling is a way to reuse discarded objects and materials to create a higher quality and more valuable product.  Upcycling can easily add value to an everyday item that might have otherwise been thrown away.  Pallets can be used for a variety of things such as: shelves, picture frames, cabinets, desks, or toy boxes, just to give a few examples of its versatility and many household uses.  The next question in your mind might be, where can I acquire wooden pallets for free or at a discounted price?  Depending on your area and their recycling programs, you could check your local pet supply stores or grocery stores, or other stores that carry big items like furniture stores and hardware stores.  You can also check online.

While choosing wooden pallets you need to watch out for wood that might not be safe to use.  Wood that is stained or oily looking, extra heavy, or contains too many nails, is wood you want to stay away from.  You don’t want any wood that looks like it is rotting or could have been exposed to pesticides or other chemicals.  Scrub the pallets down with bleach and soapy water and let them dry completely before beginning your project.  This process will kill any bacteria that might be living on or in the wood. Just remember that wood is porous, and the bacteria might run deeper.  Be careful of the pallets and the locations you get them from.  Try to find newer wood pallets if possible.

Despite these precautions, you should still wear gloves when handling the pallets and safety glasses when you are ready to dismantle the pallets and separate all the planks.  Always be mindful of nails and remember to have fun with it.  Upcycling wooden pallets is a great way to save money and create beautiful pieces for your home yourself.  You can take ordinary planks of wood and turn them into something trendy, useful, and expensive looking, and all you are spending is some of your time and patience.

Before you throw away that wooden pallet the landscaper used to deliver your mulch, give it another look. You’ve probably never given much thought to wooden pallets. Very few people do. But if you’ve ever gotten stuck with one and had no idea what to do with it when you were finished, here are a few ideas for next time.

Gardening

Did you know you can use these pallets in your garden? Wooden pallets are the perfect size and look amazing when used as a base for climbing plants like ivy or wisteria. You can mount them on the wall of your patio and put the plants behind them and through the slats, or build a free-standing structure and show off your plants that way. You can also use them to build a planter box or a pallet garden.

Furniture

Use them as a base for a futon or a couch. Even a mattress is fine. You can use smaller pallets as entertainment stands or turn them into coffee tables. You can use them to display photos or show off trophies in your kids rooms. Bookcases are a natural fit for wooden pallets; with just a few tweaks, they can be ready to display your collection. Dog beds are another option. One great idea is to use the slats and build a box for your cooler. It’ll look a lot better sitting on your deck or porch than that blue plastic cooler you currently have back there. Porch swings, trunks, benches, basically anything that’s mainly flat surfaces can be made out of wooden pallets.

And speaking of using the slats – deconstruct the pallets. This is where wooden pallets get really fun. If you’re willing to take the time and use the energy to take the pallets apart, there’s no end to what you can do with them. A quick Pinterest search will bring up thousands of pins related to decorating with wooden pallets, and the possibilities are endless. You can use pieces of them as window boxes for plants, especially if you paint them bright colors to make them really stand out. Use slats to build a hanging rack for your pots and pans.

Decorations

There are so many options available for decorating with wooden pallets. Use the slats in decreasing sizes to build a Christmas tree decoration for your home or porch. Paint the slats in bright colors and use them to hang your coats and keys. Take them completely apart and build your kids a playhouse out of the wood.

There’s almost no limit to what you can make with a wooden pallet and a little time and paint. If you have more time (and more paint) you can take it further and use that one wooden pallet to make dozens of different projects to beautify your home and garden.
